- Q. 101 years! How do you do it?
- A. By staying active. I’ve spent my retirement building grandfather clocks, furniture and even a yacht from a kit!
- Q. How did you come to join Marin County FCU?
- A. My wife Margaret and I moved out here in 1979 to be closer to my son, with whom I live since she passed away. We had always been credit union members, so we joined this one.
- Q. You’ve always been a credit union member?
- A. Yes. We joined the Detroit Teachers Credit Union during the Great Depression. I remember banks crashing and people starving in the streets, so I keep my money someplace I trust.
- Q. What do you like about credit unions?
- A. The spirit of the credit unions taking care of you. That’s why I have always kept my money in credit unions.
- Q. And you’re still diligent about your finances.
- A. Oh yes. On the 20th of each month, I never go to bed until I’ve paid all my bills.
- Q. You’ve seen good economic times and not so good. What advice would you give folks in today’s economic climate?
- A. My mother taught me to save my pennies and nickels and my father taught me "pay yourself back first." Our family and friends were poor growing up so we always saved what we could.
- Q. What did you and your wife Margaret like to do for fun?
- A. We cooked together, went out dancing to keep fit, traveled and would meet new people.
- Q. What do you like most about living in Marin County?
- A. The people of Marin and the climate which is much better than 20 below in Wisconsin.
